High Praise for the Wolverhampton Young Musician Competition.

Reprinted with permission, a letter from Mr.Pete Edwards from the Wolverhampton Music Education Hub to Rotarian and Past District Governor Richard Green who organised and hosted the event on Sunday 4th February……..

Hi Richard

Thank you so much for inviting me to be an adjudicator for the Rotary competition on Sunday. I thoroughly enjoyed the event which is of such huge benefit to the youngsters taking part and hope my contribution met with your approval 😊. The organisation of the event was brilliant, your hosting skills are impeccable, and the youngsters performing were of course, wonderful.

Back in the day we used to have the annual Wolverhampton Music Festival which was several days of competition split into voice, speech, strings, brass, woodwind etc. and I can recall many afternoons spent at the civic hall performing (I still have my certificates and winners medals to prove it!) Those competitions were a fantastic opportunity to develop the performance skills and confidence of many youngsters, all of which were of use in their future careers (not just music of course)  So this Rotary event is a very important focus for budding instrumentalists and singers in the city today.

Sadly I didn’t get the opportunity to say publicly how much the music hub/service value the support the Rotary club provides for Music in the City,  particularly through events like this one and of course the Youth Orchestra tours etc. and how much opportunities like these continue to affect all who have taken part, not only at the time but by also developing contacts, establishing friendships etc. that last a lifetime.

I was at dinner at a friends house in Lapley the other week, sat next to a High Court judge, a successful local businessman, a teacher, a property developer, an engineer, a nurse, and my wife (civil servant), all of whom were from completely different backgrounds, all went to different schools, and all of whom I met at the Music school through the Orchestras some 45 years ago!

So the support of the Rotary club is tremendously important to the City (in all its’ guises, not just Music)

Thank you again and good luck in all your future endeavours, not least the regional event later in the year.

Young Musicians Competition- Update

There were some wonderful musical and vocal talents being presented at the various club rounds of the RIBI Young Musicians Competition in Rotary District 1210. This weekend there were events at Newportlite and Wolverhampton Area clubs.
Congratulations to winners and runners up: Jessica Harrison, (voice,) Angharad Daniel (cello,) Ella Morgan (voice,) Cameron Chin-See (trumpet,) Jonty Watt (piano,) Rowan Macpherson (voice,) William Li (piano,) and Neha Patnaik (voice.)
The District Final is at 3pm. on Sunday, March 11th at Woverhampton Music Hub, Graisley Hill, Wolverhampton.

Vocational Study Exchange and Apprentices Evening Meeting

THE ROTARY CLUB OF WOLVERHAMPTON INVITES ROTARIANS, FRIENDS, FAMILY AND GUESTS TO A SPECIAL VOCATIONAL STUDY EXCHANGE (VSE) WELCOME HOME MEETING.

AT 7 FOR 7.30PM AT LINDEN HOUSE, TETTENHALL RD., WOLVERHAMPTON WV6 0DD, ON TUESDAY, MARCH 13TH THE VSE TEAM WILL BE TELLING US ABOUT THEIR EXPERIENCES IN BANGALORE.

2 OF THE TEAM MEMBERS ARE APPRENTICES AT THE MICHAEL BEETHAM AIRCRAFT RESTORATION CENTRE, RAF MUSEUM COSFORD. THEY, AND OTHER APPRENTICES THERE ARE SUPPORTED BY THE WOLVERHAMPTON CLUB. THEY WILL ALSO BE PRESENTING  AN ENTERTAINING, ILLUSTRATED TALK ABOUT THEIR  CAREERS, INCLUDING A WORKING TRIP TO THE BODO AVIATION MUSEUM, NORWAY.

THIS WILL BE FOLLOWED WITH THE PRESENTATION BY DISTRICT GOVERNOR CAROL REILLY OF THE ANNUAL PDG. GEORGE SIDEBOTHAM AWARD TO THE APPRENTICE OF THE YEAR.

THERE WILL BE A THREE COURSE DINNER COMPRISING MUSHROOM SOUP, ROAST BEEF AND APPLE PIE AND CUSTARD, WITH TEA OR COFFEE, PRICED AT ÂŁ16.50.

THESE EVENTS HAVE ALWAYS BEEN ENJOYABLE, GIVING A CHANCE TO MEET AND CHAT WITH INTERESTING YOUNG PEOPLE.

Calling Young Musicians

The Wolverhampton Area round of the RIBI Young Musician Competition will take place at 4pm on Sunday, 4th February at the Wolverhampton Music Hub, Graisley Hill.

 

It’s being supported by all the local clubs, and we have a very strong, talented field of instrumentalists and vocalists. The adjudicators are our own Jerry Hobbs BEM and Simon Platford BA (Hons), LCTL, ABSM, PGCE, the musical director of the Jackfield brass band.

Our young people deserve your support. The competition has been arranged to take place on a Sunday in an effort to ensure as many Wolverhampton Rotarians and their families, along with members of the public are able to come along. Those who have attended in the past will know that you are in for a very enjoyable, entertaining experience.

Delivering Shoeboxes

The Shoeboxes after unloading in December. They then are sorted into box types then loaded onto the next vehicle set to leave for Eastern Europe and distribution by Rotary International and its partners.

Our Club thanks everyone who filled Shoeboxes this year helping us to deliver to the International Aid warehouse in Preston for onward shipment, the magnificent total of 163 boxes.

With a mixture of household items, toys for babies, youngsters and teenagers too, the gifts will bring much happiness to many vulnerable families in Eastern Europe.

Another example of Rotary in Action!

The Rotary Club of Wolverhampton and Shelterboxes

We were all shocked by the results of Hurricane Irma across the Caribbean. Matters were made worse by the arrival of Hurricane Maria. We then saw the horrific newsreels of the Rohingya Crisis on the borders of Bangladesh and Myanmar (Burma). The Club resolved that we should respond in a meaningful manner and that we should do this through ShelterBox. This charity which is well known to Club Members were quick to respond to both crises. They had teams in both the Caribbean and Bangladesh assessing local needs and arranging for aid to be distributed. For the Caribbean this included tents, ShelterKits, solar lights and water carriers. The Club purchased eight ShelterBoxes for a total of ÂŁ4,720.

ShelterBox and Rotary are official project partners in international disaster relief. ShelterBox provide boxes containing the equipment to help prov

ide for the immediate needs of people affected by disasters. As well as the Caribbean they are also currently providing tents, blankets, children’s clothing, mattresses and kitchen sets for displaced families in Syria. Similar help has been sent to Niger where some sixteen thousand people are in a refugee camp having been driven from their homes by Boko Harram. Overshadowed by the Rohingya crisis there has been severe flooding in Bangladesh. ShelterBox are also proving help to the people worst affected.
